مباحث ارسطو در مورد توخه یا بخت، در دو حوزه هستیشناختی و ارزششناختی تناقضهای آشکاری دارد. وی در حوزه هستیشناختی به وجود بخت به عنوان علتی بالعرض که از روی انتخابِ مبتنی بر تفکر و برای مقصودی روی میدهدمعترف شده است. ارسطو امور حاصل از بخت را موضوع قصد و تعقل میداند که از عوامل دارای افعال ارادی سر میزنند. وی در عین حال بخت را به عنوان امری ضدقاعده، ناپایدار، دارای علل نامعین و بدون غایت معرفی کرده است. وی حتی در حوزه افعال مربوط به تخنه و سعادت انسان نیز وجود بخت را پذیرفته است؛ اما از لحاظ ارزششناختی برای آن اعتبار ارزشی قایل نیست و آن را علتی بالعرض و مؤخر از طبیعت و عقل بیان نموده و حتی معتقد است که برای آن علمی وجود ندارد. علاوه بر این در حوزه افعال مربوط به سعادت انسان نیز آن را فاقد اعتبار ارزشی بیان نموده است.
